Internet Fallback – How does it work?

Internet Fallback-as-your-Service

A Profitable, Plug-and-Play Connectivity Solution for Channel Partners

What is Internet Fallback?

Internet Fallback (also known as 4G failover) is a simple but powerful concept: if your primary internet connection goes down — due to a network outage, router issue, or service disruption — a secondary connection takes over automatically. In most cases, that secondary connection is a 4G or LTE SIM card inside the router.

This ensures that essential systems like payment terminals, security cameras, or remote access tools stay online — without interruption.

Why It Matters

For many businesses, even a few minutes of downtime can cause lost sales, customer frustration or service disruption. In cases where cable infrastructure is damaged it can take several days to repair. A fallback solution ensures business continuity — keeping critical devices online when it matters most.

What’s Required

Hardware
To enable internet failback, you need a router or gateway that has a SIM card slot. 4G/LTE routers/gateways have SIM-card slots as part of their dual WAN set-up, that enables them to use both fiber and cellular connectivity. Similarly, industrial gateways/routers in IoT field applications will typically have a SIM card slot. Common brands that carry gateways and routers whith these functionalities include Teltonika, Robustel, Cradlepoint and Sierra Wireless.

Multi-Network SIM Card
Ideally, the failover SIM should support multi-network roaming, allowing it to automatically connect to the strongest available network. This ensures more reliable local coverage — especially in remote areas or in the event of a provider-specific outage — and adds a layer of resilience to critical connectivity.

Fair Pricing
Fallback usage can be irregular — which is why standard subscription plans don’t always make sense. Look for a data plan with:

  • A low monthly standby fee
  • Flexible Pay-As-You-Go pricing
  • No fixed bundles or overage fees

This allows your customers to stay protected without overpaying.

The Opportunity for Resellers

Most modern internet routers and gateways already include embedded SIM slots. This functionality is often left unused. With a simple, active SIM card, resellers can unlock that capability and deliver instant value: backup connectivity, bandwidth augmentation, or full failover support.

Why Channel Partners Love It

This model works because it creates a reliable stream of recurring revenue and integrates easily into both new and existing installations. It’s a great way to add a new revenue stream for resellers who already sell hardware, by bundling connectivity with their existing offerings. It also opens up opportunities to upsell value-added services like VPNs, Fixed IP, and Custom APNs. On top of that, there’s no hassle with postpaid invoicing — customers simply top up their wallet.

You control the customer relationship and brand experience. Want to go further? You can white-label the platform, define your own connectivity plans, and manage billing with your own integrated payment service provider.

Built on the Business Wallet Model

Our solution is built on the Business Wallet model — a modern, flexible credit-based system that replaces traditional postpaid or subscription billing. Instead of monthly invoices, customers simply top up their digital Wallet and pay only for what they use.

The Wallet makes it easy for your customers to manage costs: they can pool credits across multiple SIMs, control usage on the SIM Management Platform, and add value-added features like VPN or Fixed IP on demand.

As a partner, you benefit too. The Wallet enables real-time revenue recognition, reduces administrative overhead, and simplifies bundling and upselling. Plus, with top-up incentives and kickback options, it supports scalable service delivery — with global reach.
